HV Hyche, Joy Division, Ian CurtisWhat art do you most identify with?

I still feel a deep connection – both stylistically and emotionally – to the riot grrrl movement and the DIY zine scene that surrounded it.

What themes do you pursue?

The dreamy and the ultra femme, which are aspects of myself I had a hard time tapping into when growing up.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

To quote James Spader’s character Graham from SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE, “You should never take advice from someone that doesn’t know you intimately.”

That being said, I don’t take much advice.HV Hyche

I’m making this up as I go along.

Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?

Growing up in an ultra religious Alabama town probably had more impact than any single situation I have experienced. I learned to escape through creating.

Name three artists who inspire you.

Jean Rollin – I am envious of his ability to create dreamy atmospheres.

Glenn Branca – Recently, I have been revisiting his stunning 1981 album The Ascension. The iconic Robert Longo painting on the cover doesn’t hurt, either.

Chloe Sevigny – I have been obsessed with the fabric-covered book of photographs she released last year. She oozes cool.
